NOÉ IS PRESENT AT THE WORLD NATURE CONGRESS TO TELL ITS EXPERIENCE AND TAKE PART IN THE DEBATE

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the French Government are organizing the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 from 3 to 11 September 2021 in Marseille. The event, originally scheduled for June 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being offered in a hybrid format adapted to health conditions with a distance and face-to-face programme.

WHAT IS THE WORLD CONSERVATION CONGRESS ?

Every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress brings together thousands of delegates (10,000 in 2016), including conservation experts and practitioners, government and business representatives, indigenous peoples, scientists, and other professional stakeholders interested in nature and the fair and sustainable use of natural resources.

This year, it will take place in Marseille from 3 to 11 September 2021, at the Parc Chanot. It is the major international meeting before the COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, a major event that will revise the international biodiversity objectives (Aïchi objectives) and the commitment of the 196 States Parties to the Convention for the period 2021-2030 by formalising a new global strategic plan.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE CONGRESS

The Congress aims to strengthen efforts to protect biodiversity worldwide and to promote solutions to the most pressing environmental and sustainable development challenges. It aims to :

  • Bring together and mobilise the global conservation network
  • Identify and exchange on important and emerging conservation issues
  • Initiate new actions for conservation
  • Set and influence the global conservation agenda and priorities for action (especially in view of the CBD COP 15 in Kunming, China in late 2021)

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CONGRESS

The Congress is divided into 2 main parts:

  • The Forum (4-7 September), open to the public, where IUCN members and partners can exchange ideas.
  • The Members' Assembly (8-10 September) (for members only), the highest decision-making body of IUCN, where members will debate international environmental policies, approve the IUCN Programme (through voting on motions that become resolutions or recommendations) and elect the IUCN Council and its President.

Noé is a member of IUCN and the French Committee of IUCN. We are also the bearers of two motions that have already been accepted: Generalise alternative techniques to the use of pesticides & Increase funding for developing countries.

For this 2021 edition, the French Office for Biodiversity is also proposing the Espaces Génération Nature, a large biodiversity village open to all from 4 to 11 September and targeting young people and schoolchildren in particular.
